CAPE CORAL, Fla. Inspectors will return the the condominium complex to check and see if the pool where two children drowned last week is up to code and safe.
The original fence had a manual gate, but the ultimate goal is to have a self locking gate system with poles placed permanently in the ground, according to officials from the Baby Barrier Pool Fence Company, who were at the complex Sunday.
The purpose of the inspection is to prevent an incident like this from happening again.
A barrier was installed following the drowning, but it was deemed unsafe. Residents received notifications on their doors.
The incident happened around 10:17 p.m. on Monday at the complex on the 1000 block of Southwest 47th Terrace when Eric Merchant Sr. went to the bathroom, and returned to find his two children, 3, and 1, lifeless in the pool, according to the police report. Merchant said he does not know how they ended up in the pool.
The incident remains under investigation.
