FORT MYERS, Fla. The city issued a temporary burn ban Friday, the City of Fort Myers said.

The burn ban, which prohibits most open burning with the exception of barbecues, is effective immediately until extreme drought conditions improve, the city said. This comes after Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency on April 11 in response to wildfires burning around the state.

The temporary burn ban will prohibit residents to set fire to the following:

  • Forest
  • Grassland
  • Wild land
  • Marsh
  • Vegetation
  • Land in urban or rural areas, which includes agriculture and pile burning.

The ban doesn’t apply to any prescribed agriculture and pile burning that is authorized by the Florida Fire Service, the city said.
