FORT MYERS, Fla. It had been an ordinary Friday night for Rogerio Anjos, known to many as DJ Roger Brazil.
He went to Blu Sushi Downtown, one of his favorite hangouts, and had his usual order of drinks and food as he waited for a friend. When that friend failed to show up, he gave Blu Sushi manager Dominka Kennedy a hug and left.
Hours later, he was gunned down in the city’s first homicide of 2017.
“When he left he said he was going to go out, went to Sky Bar or here or there, and that was that,” Kennedy said.
He wound up at Scarlett’s Cabaret on 3650 Fowler St., where he and a friend got into an argument around 2 a.m. with three men about a parking space, according to nightclub management. One of the men shot Anjos, who died from his gunshot wound shortly after he was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.
“I heard someone got shot, but when I saw his face I was like … oh my God,” Kennedy said. “I get goosebumps still just talking about it.”
The three men remain at large. It’s unclear if the friend Anjos was with at Scarlett’s was the friend he was waiting on at Blu Sushi. Anjos had many friends, according to Kennedy.
“He knows everybody downtown,” she said.
Longtime friend Wendy White of North Fort Myers remembered Anjos for his “very giving and loving” way with those he knew. His loss was devastating for Kennedy, made doubly so by the circumstances that led to his death.
