SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is taking steps to make Southwest Florida roads safer by staking out busy intersections.

Drivers running red lights are accountable for hundreds of deaths each year, according to the National Coalition for Safer Roads.

Nearly 100 drivers were issued tickets for running through intersections like Gladiolus Road and U.S. 41, deputies said.

While running red lights is a dangerous risk, it is particularly high occurrence among millennials. Nearly 50 percent have driven through a red light even though there was a known opportunity to stop, according to a AAA study.

“Alarmingly, some of the drivers ages 19-24 believe that their dangerous driving behavior is acceptable,” said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety executive director.

Red light runners caught by LCSO deputies will be fined $259 and receive four points on their license.
